Brian R. McGee is Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. In this role, McGee serves as the chief academic officer of the College of Charleston and a key member of the President's senior staff. McGee oversees academic programs, faculty affairs and many academic support functions, and works to ensure that the College of Charleston fulfills its institutional mission and goals.

McGee previously served as Chief of Staff and Senior Vice President of Executive Administration and as chair of the Department of Communication, which offers one of the largest undergraduate programs at the College of Charleston. A tenured member of the College’s faculty since 2004, he is a professor of communication, a member of the graduate faculty and a faculty associate in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. Before coming to Charleston, McGee taught at Spalding University, where he was chair of the School of Communication and director of the Business Communication Graduate Program, and Texas Tech University, where he taught communication courses and was a member of the women’s studies and graduate faculties. He has over 20 years of undergraduate and graduate teaching experience.

McGee’s research covers several areas, including political rhetoric, argumentation and communication about race, ethnicity and gender. He has presented his work at more than 50 conferences and has had numerous articles published in academic journals, including Argumentation and Advocacy, Southern Communication Journal, Western Journal of Communication and Women’s Studies in Communication. He has served on several editorial boards, is a former editor of Contemporary Argumentation and Debate, and previously was a division chair for the Southern States Communication Association. He has provided expert commentary on political campaign communication for the leading television and radio news outlets in the Charleston region.

McGee has chaired or served on several Faculty Senate committees and been faculty parliamentarian at three different universities, including the College of Charleston.
