George P. Watt Jr. joined the leadership team of the College of Charleston as executive vice president of institutional advancement in September 2008. At the same time, he assumed the role of executive director for the College of Charleston Foundation. As such, he is responsible for providing a coordinated, campuswide approach to fundraising and friend-raising, as well as for assuring growth in the endowed funds held for the College by the Foundation. Watt works in partnership with the president, the provost, the executive team and two volunteer boards while leading an organization of professionals engaged in alumni relations, university development, annual fund programs, advancement services and institutional funds management.

Watt came to the College from the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, where – as the joint president and chief executive officer – he led the effort for substantial increases in alumni membership and member services at the Alumni Association as well as growth in net assets, unrestricted reserves and private donations for the foundation. In 2005, the Naval Academy Foundation, with Watt at the helm, completed a six-year comprehensive campaign resulting in $254 million in new commitments. Prior to that, he was a senior vice president and managing director of First Union Corporation’s Enterprise Solutions Group. While with the IBM Corporation, Watt held a variety of sales, staff and management positions, ultimately taking on the role of principal in IBM Consulting Group’s North American Financial Services practice. Before joining IBM, Watt was an officer in the U.S. Navy, having received his commission at the United States Naval Academy in June 1973. Upon leaving the Navy in late 1980, he affiliated with the Naval Air Reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain in July 1995.

Watt has been active for many years in the nonprofit and education communities, serving on multiple boards for United Way, the arts and sciences and with churches in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. He and his wife, Peggy, are active in the Naval Academy Foundation’s President’s Circle and Robert Means Thompson donor societies, as well as the College of Charleston’s 1770 Society and Cougar Club. They are past members of the Kanuga Board of Visitors. They now reside in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., where they enjoy the beauty and pace of the Lowcountry
